I am a Linux enthusiast, a multi-engine instrument-rated pilot, and a traveller. I am interested in all aspects of computing and technology in general, especially Linux and Free Software. As an avid pilot I can be found somewhere over the skies of the southwestern US most weekends. As a traveller I have been to many interesting places. Check out my photo gallery. Linux
My
operating system of choice is Linux. I have been using Linux since 1993. Back then and over the next few years I ran into a number of people who told me Linux would never amount to anything. It sure feels good to be right! Linux has grown into a very capable OS which has really made an impact on the computing world.
Why Linux?
Linux is FREE SOFTWARE. Free as in Freedom. I can inspect how it works internally, change it, give copies to my friends. Linus Torvalds wrote the Linux kernel but Richard M Stallman made it Free. I owe them both my career.
Linux lets me do things that other more
common
operating systems are incapable of doing and gives me more freedom than
any
commercially available operating system. It keeps no secrets from me
and works
with me to do what I want instead of against me to keep me from doing
what some
greedy corporation does not want me to do. It does not get
viruses or spyware. And now with SE Linux it is probably the most secure OS the average person can get. I have never used virus scanners in over 10
years and have never had a problem. Linux is the fastest, most
powerful,
most flexible operating system available to the general public. And to
top it
all off, it is completely free and you are encouraged to give copies to
your
friends. No strings attached. But don't think of it as free as in you
pay
nothing. Think of it as free as in FREEDOM to do with it whatever you
want.
Those who know what is important realize how valuable that is.
It is definitely possible to be 100%
Microsoft-free.
